About Me |

Born in Detroit and raised in Shelby Township, Derek started playing guitar at age 11, influenced heavily by technical players such as Satriani and Vai. He went on to start singing and performing acoustic sets in 96 while attending college in order to pay the bills and to provide his friends justification to go to the bar. - from Exposure North interview "I am moved by artists who have mastered their craft, especially instrumental jazz, classical, flamenco, and acoustic guitarists (which I call “the clean guitarists”). It is the essence of the instrument itself; the relationship between wood, steel/nylon, the mind, and soul." - D. Boik "I believe music is the ultimate freedom of expression and communication - it is an omnipresent art form that intrinsically evokes a response in everyone and everything. There is a rhythm and melody to the inner workings of this planet, and to create or even interpret this energy on your own, bequeaths a collective sense of belonging, oneness, and spirituality. I continue to learn and play to provide myself with a positive artistic outlet, but I can honestly admit that there is no comparable feeling when you know you’re being appreciated and respected by others for doing what you love." - D.
